50-Mile Meal to Benefit Garrett's Farm-to-Table Efforts

8/7/2014

A 50-Mile Meal is being prepared using as many ingredients as possible sourced within 50 miles at MoonShadow Café in Accident as part of the 2nd annual “Serve It Up Local: Celebrating Farms & Food” celebration on August 15.

The three-course dinner will start with a local salad with creamy buttermilk ranch dressing using local greens, sweet corn, cucumbers, roasted beets, onions, pickled green beans and tomatoes.  The second course will feature brisket, smoked using local wood chips, along with creamy mashed potatoes and garlic green beans.  The vegetarian option will include grilled squash, zucchini and eggplant topped with Allegheny Chèvre, kale stem pesto and roasted garlic.  The final course is a decadent maple crème brûlée with fresh berries.

“We are so happy to be partnering with MoonShadow Café to offer a portion of our Serve It Up Local festival this year,” said Cheryl DeBerry, Natural Resources Business Specialist for Garrett County Office of Economic Development.  “We received a grant last year to do a full day’s festivities, but this summer we weren’t able to do so.  MoonShadow Café is doing a great job at sourcing as many of the ingredients locally as possible and it’s going to be an amazing meal.”

The plated dinner will start at 6:00 pm on Friday, August 15.  An alternative menu for children is being developed.  Though walk-ins will be taken, it is best to RSVP as a limited number of meals is being planned.  The café will only serve the 50-Mile Meal and cannot offer other menu items during the event.  The meal will cost $40, which includes the meal and non-alcoholic drinks.  Gratuity is not included.  The meal benefits farm-to-table activities in Garrett County.

To make an RSVP, contact MoonShadow Café at 301-750-5094.  For more information, visit www.ServeItUpLocal.com

We came away from our first event tremendously amazed, thankful, inspired, and exceptionally tired!

Thanks to the many, many people who helped make our event a success!  From the Cook Off chefs and their support staff, to the awesome Appalachian style bands and sound guys, to the farm and artisan vendors with their beautiful products, to Chanteclaire Farm and Firefly Farms' delicious 50-Mile Meal, to the volunteers who walked many miles and set up (and tore down) a zillion chairs and tables, to the cooking demo chefs who taught us some new ways to cook local foods, to the Garrett Co. Board of Education for allowing us to use their room dividers, to the photographers and videographers, to the generous sponsors who gave money, to our supporters who gave time other non-mosupport, and everyone else who contributed to the event, we say thank you.

And the biggest thank you goes to YOU!  For attending, for sharing our updates on facebook and mentioning us in twitter, for encouraging your friends and neighbors to attend, and every way, big and small, that you helped us.

Thank you so very much!
